How to Get Out of a Real Estate Slump

Written by HomeSmart International Marketing Team | Oct 24, 2019 5:10:20 PM

Take a moment to think about the power you have as a real estate agent. You have one of the most impactful jobs out there––you help people navigate one of the biggest investments they’ll ever make. But at the same time, you often work long hours that sometimes leave you feeling in a slump. While it’s healthy to acknowledge when you’re lacking motivation, it’s more important to find your way out of this feeling. Staying unmotivated for too long can put your personal and professional life at risk.

If you’re in a slump, these tips will help you get out of it quickly so that you can get back to working at your full potential.

1) Focus on Your Health

The flexible hours of a real estate career is one of its biggest draws, but this can also be one of its biggest downfalls if you don’t plan out your time effectively. Many agents get so caught up in their work that they lose sight of their priorities. If you find yourself constantly working long nights and weekends and not having enough time to take care of yourself, it’s no wonder that you’re in a slump!

Showing up for your current clients and obtaining new ones can only happen if you’re in good health. Taking care of yourself should always be a priority, no matter what that looks like for you. Preparing healthy meals, going to the gym, getting a restful night of sleep and allowing time for self-care are just a few examples of ways you can stay in good health and put your best foot forward in your work.

2) Make Time for Fun

Your mental state is an important part of your health––so important that we had to make a tip centered around it. As a hardworking agent, one of the best ways that you can keep a healthy mental state is by taking time away to have fun without pressuring yourself to focus on your business. Whether it’s planning a dinner with friends, going on an outing with your family or taking a night for yourself, make a conscious effort to set personal plans and stick to them. You might be surprised to see how much more productive you are when you have something to look forward to.

3) Switch Up Your Business

All of this talk about your health isn’t to say that you should just forget about your business altogether. As important as it is to take time away from your work, you still need to focus on how you can grow your business in order to be successful. If you’re in a slump, regardless of the great work you’ve been doing, you might need to consider switching up how you do things. Maybe this means redesigning your listing presentation, working on your social media presence or taking continuing education classes to find new ideas on how you can take your business to the next level and gain new prospects. The possibilities are endless, so be open to the idea of experimenting! You might find a new business strategy that increases your motivation and your success.

At HomeSmart, we offer extensive training resources for our agents so they never get bored or stuck in their business. From in-person classes and mentorship programs to virtual webinars and podcasts, we’re always giving our agents new strategies to implement wherever they are in their business.

4) Remember Why You're Doing This

It can be challenging to see clearly when you’re burnt-out from the work you’re doing, but this is when it’s most important to find your focus. If you don’t remember your “why,” it won’t be easy to stay motivated in your business. Why did you get into real estate in the first place? What do you love about your job? You wouldn’t be here if you didn’t get something out of being a real estate agent, so identify what that is and use it to motivate you whenever you’re feeling burnt-out. A powerful way to remind yourself of your “why” is to write it down in a place where you can see it everyday. This can be on a sticky note at your desk or on a vision board hung up in your bedroom. Find what works for you, and use it as a tool to pull yourself out of a slump.

Despite the slumps that you’ll sometimes face, being a real estate agent is a powerful thing. You’re admired for your ability to transform lives and appreciated by those whose lives you’ve already changed. Wherever you are in your business, you’re making a difference in the world with your work, and that’s a pretty big deal!
